A Legacy of Excellence: The History of Orthopaedic Institute of Ohio

The Orthopaedic Institute of Ohio (OIO) has a rich history of providing exceptional orthopaedic care to the communities of northwest and west-central Ohio. Established in October of 1997, OIO was founded when eight physicians from two separate practices came together with a shared vision: to create a comprehensive, physician-led orthopaedic facility that would provide top-tier diagnostic imaging, treatment, and surgical care under one roof. Several of these founding physicians were natives of the Lima area, dedicated to giving back to the communities that shaped them.

A significant milestone in OIO’s history was the establishment of its own surgery center, now known as the Institute for Orthopaedic Surgery (IOS). One of the first orthopaedic surgical specialty hospitals in both the state and the nation, IOS began as an ambulatory surgery center in March of 1998. By 2002, it had evolved into an accredited acute care hospital, offering inpatient accommodations and further enhancing the comprehensive care available to patients.

In October 2006, OIO underwent a major transformation with a highly competitive and significant merger with West Central Ohio Orthopaedics. This merger brought four additional physicians into the practice, solidifying OIO’s presence as a dominant orthopaedic provider in the region. The integration of these two groups marked a pivotal moment, as they combined expertise and resources to further enhance patient care and expand services. The increased demand for orthopaedic care following this merger led to a surge in physician recruitment, allowing OIO to rapidly grow its team to meet the needs of its expanding patient base. This period of growth positioned OIO as a premier destination for orthopaedic treatment, attracting top-tier talent and further elevating the level of care available to the community.

Growth and expansion continued as OIO merged with Ohio Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in 2018, adding five physicians from the Findlay area to the team. This strategic merger strengthened the practice’s ability to serve a broader patient base while maintaining the same commitment to excellence that defined its early years.

Over the years, OIO has extended its reach, establishing offices in more than 10 locations across northwest and west-central Ohio. This expansion reflects the dedication of many area-native physicians who returned home to serve the very communities that raised them. Today, OIO proudly boasts a team of over 20 physicians, continuing to build on its legacy of compassionate, expert care.

In response to growing patient needs, the Institute for Orthopaedic Surgery underwent a massive renovation and expansion between 2022 and 2024. This ambitious project increased the facility’s capacity significantly, expanding from three operating rooms to eight and adding additional overnight accommodations to support the hospital’s growing inpatient services.

With a steadfast commitment to innovation, patient-centered care, and community service, the Orthopaedic Institute of Ohio continues to set the standard for orthopaedic excellence in the region. As OIO moves forward, its mission remains the same: to provide outstanding orthopaedic care while staying true to its deep-rooted connection with the communities it serves.
